Introduction
“Kake Di Hatti”—What Does It Mean?
The term “Kake” is a Punjabi word commonly used to refer to a young man or boy, while “Di” means “of” or “belonging to,” and “Hatti” translates to “shop” or “small eatery.” Together, “Kake Di Hatti” signifies “Kake’s Eatery,” a name that perfectly embodies its humble beginnings as a small establishment. The restaurant, which began its journey as a small cart in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, has now won the hearts of millions of customers across India.
This study on the renowned restaurant is my own initiative, compiled from various online sources. My interest in Kake di Hatti grew when I was researching “Kake D Hatti,” another similar restaurant in Kolkata. While exploring, I came across information about Kake di Hatti, established in 1942. Initially, I was confused and thought both were the same, but I soon realized they were entirely different. Kake di Hatti proudly carries a legacy spanning four generations.
Humble Beginning
In the heart of Old Delhi, where the aroma of spices dances through narrow lanes and the echoes of history resonates in every corner, a culinary legend was born. It was 1942, a time of upheaval and uncertainty, but also a time of dreams and resilience. Mr. Bhagvan Singh, a man with a passion for food and an unwavering spirit, laid the foundation of what would become Kake Di Hatti.
Kake Di Hatti emerged in 1942 as a modest, stand-alone venture in the bustling alleyway of Old Delhi 6, Chandni Chowk, conceived by the visionary Mr. Bhagvan Singh.
Struggle Days
The initial years were fraught with challenges. India was on the cusp of independence, and resources were scarce. Sourcing high-quality ingredients during wartime rationing was a daily struggle. Mr. Bhagvan Singh would often wake up before dawn, navigating the crowded markets to find the freshest produce.
He faced financial constraints, relying on meagre savings and the support of his family. The competition in Chandni Chowk was fierce, with numerous established eateries vying for customers. To stand out, Mr. Bhagvan Singh focused on perfecting his Tandoori recipe, ensuring each plate was a symphony of flavours. He also prioritized customer service, treating every patron with warmth and respect, building a loyal following one customer at a time. There were days when sales were low, and doubts crept in, but Mr. Bhagvan Singh’s unwavering belief in his craft kept him going.
Growth Phase
The turning point came when the reins were passed down to Mr. Jaspal Singh. He, along with Mr. Gurdeep Singh, brought a fresh perspective and a spirit of innovation. Recognizing the potential of the tandoor, they experimented with stuffed naans, creating a range of delectable fillings that were an instant hit. This pioneering concept of tandoori stuffed naans set Kake Di Hatti apart, attracting food enthusiasts from far and wide.
The menu expanded, introducing a variety of Punjabi and North Indian delicacies, each prepared with the same dedication to quality and authenticity. Under the astute guidance of Mr. Gurdeep Singh, Kake Di Hatti underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving from a cherished local eatery into a nationwide restaurant group, boasting over 85 branches across India with more than 300 menu items. This expansion involved meticulous planning, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to maintaining the original flavours and standards across all locations. Franchising opportunities were carefully considered, ensuring each franchisee shared the same passion for food and customer service.

Emphasis on Kolkata Branches
Kake Di Hatti’s foray into West Bengal marked a significant milestone in its expansion journey. The vibrant culinary scene of Kolkata, with its discerning palate and appreciation for authentic flavours, presented both an opportunity and a challenge.
The first branch in Bhawanipore [Located at Neeranand Plaza, Premises, No. 34, Ganga Prasad Mukherjee Rd, P.O, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700025, Phone: 8100164252], a culturally rich neighborhood in South Kolkata, was an instant success. The menu was carefully curated to cater to local tastes, with subtle adaptations to spice levels and ingredient preferences. Following the success of Bhawanipore, branches were established in Kankurgachi and Salt Lake, two prominent areas in Kolkata.
The Kankurgachi branch [52, Hem Chandra Naskar Rd, Sura Cross Lane, Phool Bagan, Beleghata, Kolkata, West Bengal 700010, Phone: 7003052916, located in a bustling commercial hub, attracted a diverse clientele, including office workers, families, and students.
The Salt Lake branch [Plot No. 242, Ground Floor, Block – CG, Sector – II, Salt Lake City, Kolkata, West Bengal – 700091, Phone: 8910332357], situated in a planned township known for its upscale residential areas and IT parks, catered to a more cosmopolitan crowd.
Each West Bengal branch maintains the signature Kake Di Hatti experience while incorporating local elements. The interiors are adorned with traditional Bengali artwork, and the staff is trained to provide warm and personalized service, reflecting the region’s hospitality. The success of Kake Di Hatti in West Bengal can be attributed to its ability to blend tradition with innovation, offering a familiar yet exciting culinary experience that resonates with the local community.

What Makes the Restaurant Unique
Kake Di Hatti, rightfully celebrated as the ‘King of Naan,’ is distinguished by its unparalleled assortment of oversized naans, affectionately dubbed ‘naan-i-licious.’ From timeless classics to inventive creations like Hariyali Naan, Mooli Naan, and Cheese Broccoli Naans, every naan is an exquisite culinary masterpiece. The secret to their exceptional naans lies in the quality of ingredients, the traditional tandoor ovens, and the skilled artisans who meticulously prepare each one. The dough is made fresh daily, using a blend of premium flours and spices. The fillings are carefully selected, ensuring a harmonious balance of flavours and textures. The naans are then baked in the tandoor, imparting a smoky aroma and a perfectly crisp yet soft texture.
Nearby Attractions
While the original Kake Di Hatti in Chandni Chowk is surrounded by historical landmarks and bustling markets, the West Bengal branches also offer proximity to local attractions. The Bhawanipore branch is close to Netaji Bhavan, the ancestral home of Subhas Chandra Bose. Places such as Kalighat Temple, Victoria Memorial Hall, Science City, and Alipore Zoo are located in close proximity, making them convenient to visit. The Kankurgachi branch is near the Science City, a popular science museum. The Salt Lake branch is conveniently located near several shopping malls and entertainment hubs.
